 Jurij Frey
Bathers at night
Oil on Canvas.
39.4 W x 39.4 H x 0.8 in

The German artist Jurij Frey has developed a realist style of painting whose blocks of colour and contrasts of light nevertheless allow us to make out all of the inner complexity. Inspired by a universal subject, man and his condition, the painter and trained illustrator proceeds with touches that he applies with lively, irregular gestures, always allowing haziness, an incertitude in the contours of shapes to appear, symbolising the doubt present in each of us. Exploring the contrast between speed, acceleration of urban life and personal, intimate searching for serenity, peace, the need for nature, light, wandering and large spaces, the artist points out the contradictions of the contemporary world. Capturing these subtle emotions through lively and hot-headed painting, Jurij Frey gives himself over to a contrasted practice between big brush strokes that are wide and almost clumsy, and nimbleness, the fleetingness of the moment celebrated in his paintings by the light. Inspired first of all by the city he lives in, he draws on the marks that history, architecture and traditions have left behind, that fight to prevail at the same time as they contain their breath to give way to Modern Times. More on Jurij Frey

Romualdo Locatelli, (Italian, 1905-1943)
Risveglio/Awakening
Oil on canvas
117.5 x 91cm (46 1/4 x 35 13/16in).
Private Collection

For Locatelli there are no problems beyond the beauty of the abundance of life. One will find no depth and metaphysical ideas in his work. In a spontaneous manner he reveals the beauty of the body and nature. Here there is no sadness and sorrow that are shown, but their opposite, the beauty and happiness of the world. Here are no complicated voices from a mysterious psyche but here is presented pure pleasure of the senses. (V. N. De Javabode, 1939)

Romualdo Locatelli ( Bergamo , 1905 - Manila , 1943?) Was an Italian painter. Born into a family of painters and decorators, in whose workshop was formed nine artists. He learnt from his father the art of restoration and decoration. He applied to the art school Andrea Fantoni, then to Pontian Loverini Accademia Carrara.

A fall from the scaffolding for the wall decoration of a church seriously compromising the health of his father, and probably influences the choice of Romualdo moving permanently to painting at the easel and in the studio. His fame began when he was just seventeen with his work PAIN, which portrayed the sick and ailing father.

Driven by an insatiable wanderlust Romualdo travels to Sardinia, Abruzzo, Tuscany and as far as Africa, with his friend Ernesto Quarter Marchiò. He then moved to Rome, where Prince Umberto of Savoy commissioned the portraits of his children Vittorio Emanuele and Maria Pia. Despite the extreme success he achieved in the capital with his studio in via Margutta, he decides to move to the East. In 1939 he left Indonesia, first in Jakarta and then to Bali, where he became friends with the Italian-Egyptian painter Emilio Ambron. Numerous friendships in diplomatic circles enabled him to exhibit in New York city in 1941.

Eventually Romualdo was no longer able to work; and his only entertainment was to go hunting. On February 24, 1943 went out hunting and did not return. More on Romualdo Locatelli

01 Works, The Art Of The Nude, with footnotes # 36

Leo Putz, 1869 - 1940, GERMAN
WALDESRUHE (FOREST CALM)
Oil on canvas
69 by 76.5 cm., 27 by 30in.
Private Collection

Painted in Gauting circa 1925 after the artist's return from exile in the Netherlands during the First World War, this painting exemplifies Putz's freely painted compositions of nudes and bathers by the water's edge. The setting for this and so many of Putz's paintings was the lake country around Schloss Hartmannsberg, where the artist and his family summered annually before the War, and again in the 1920s. More on this painting

Leo Putz (18 June 1869, in Merano – 21 July 1940, in Merano) was a Tyrolean painter. His work encompasses Art Nouveau, Impressionism and the beginnings of Expressionism. Figures, nudes and landscapes are his predominant subjects.

He began his studies at the age of sixteen at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. His father then sent him to the Académie Julian in Paris. After military service, he returned to Munich and studied with Paul Hoecker. He opened his first studio in 1897. That same year, he became a member of the Munich Secession. He worked with the weekly magazine Jugend and many of his paintings were reproduced on the magazine's title page. During this time, he also worked as a commercial artist, creating many posters in Art Nouveau style and billboards for the Moderne Galerie München.

He became an honorary citizen of Bavaria in 1909; a prerequisite for becoming a Professor, which appointment he received that same year. Between 1909 and 1914, he spent his summers at Schloss Hartmannsberg near Chiemgau to practice plein-air painting. It was there that he created his best-known works; the two series known as the "Boat Pictures" and the "Bathers".

He accepted an invitation to move to Brazil in 1929. At the request of Lúcio Costa, he took a professorship at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes in 1931. During his stay, his colors took on a more tropical flavor and the exotic plant life became a favorite subject.  He returned to Germany in 1933.

He became an opponent of National Socialism and his art was labelled "degenerate". Beginning in 1936, he was repeatedly interrogated by the Gestapo and was forced to flee back to his native region, the South Tyrol. In 1937, he was officially banned from working in Germany. For the remainder of his life, he concentrated on painting castles, villages and benign landscapes.

He died in 1940. More on Leo Putz

01 Painting, The Art Of The Nude, with footnotes # 33

WILLIAM HENRY CLAPP, A.R.C.A.
THE ARTIST AND HIS MODEL
oil on panel
10.5 ins x 13.75 ins; 26.7 cms x 34.9 cms
Private collection

William Henry Clapp is one of the monarchs of Canadian Impressionism.  Indifferent as an artist to the emotional elements implicit in everyday experience, he extolled landscapes and the human figure - specifically the nude.  In painting these works, he observed the phenomena of light on the generative forces of the organic world.  The body is only a detail, an iconography, subordinate to the pattern in which light and shade govern vision.  Immersed in golden quietude, Clapp's art is all the more credible because of its objective truth - an art of passive reverie that has inspired all Impressionists since Renoir who are preoccupied with light and colour to the exclusion of human issues."A signature of his works, Clapp's setting is diaphanous and diffused.  Mauves and violets blend with rosy white to form his model's supple flesh.  The eye is attracted by the sensuous application of colour, a hazy softness that tempts and beguiles us.  The artist gazes back at the viewer, catching us in our intrigue of this Andromeda, against a backdrop of deep yellow. More on this painting

William Henry Clapp, landscape and figure painter (b at Montréal 29 Oct 1879; d at Oakland, Ca 21 Apr 1954). Born of American parents, Clapp lived in Oakland 1885-1900. He studied at the Art Association of Montreal 1900-03 with William BRYMNER, and painted at St-Joachim and Baie-Saint-Paul with Clarence GAGNON. From 1904 to 1908 he studied in Paris at the Académie Julian, the Académie Colarossi and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière with J.-P. Laurens, Tony Robert-Fleury and Lucien Simon, and in Madrid with William Laparra. He painted in Belgium and Spain.

Living in Montréal from 1908 to 1915, Clapp exhibited some of the most advanced impressionist canvases in Canada. Almost a pointillist in touch, his surfaces vibrate with broken colour and dappled light. Clapp left for Cuba in 1915, settling in Oakland in 1917, where he was curator (1918-20) and director of the Oakland Art Gallery (1920-1949). In Canada he was a member of the Canadian Art Club (1913-15) and in California of the Society of Six (1923-28). He stopped exhibiting in Canada in 1918. More on William Henry Clapp
