Helmut Newton was born on October 31, 1920, in Berlin, Germany. He attended the American School in Berlin. From an early age, Newton developed a keen obsession with photography, purchasing his very first camera aged 12. Four years later, Newton was to turn his back on mainstream education, taking an apprenticeship with renowned German photographer, Elsle Simon, known as Yva. Her surreal, multiple exposure photographs that took in fashion, theater and the nude were to inspire Newton throughout his career.

On November 9, 1938, Newton, secured passage to China, where he stopped in Singapore until 1940 before leaving to Australia and finding work as a truck driver in the Australian Army.

In 1948, he married actress June Browne, herself a photographer under the name of Alice Springs, a name she chose from a map of Australia. High-profile contracts with Australian Vogue in the 1950’s; British Vogue in 1957-1958; French Vogue in 1961 provided Newton with the exposure that would allow him to stamp his style on fashion photography over the next 40 years.

Known as the ‘King of Kink’, Newton’s erotically charged imagery was provocative as it was masterful in its compositional and narrative direction. Creating highly charged images layered with voyeuristic, sado-masochist undertexts, Newton was drawn to empowered woman presenting a potent image of female sexuality in the 60’s and 70’s.

Newton died, aged 83, in 2004 following a major car accident in Los Angeles. More on Helmut Newton

Norman Alfred William Lindsay (22 February 1879 – 21 November 1969) was an Australian artist, etcher, sculptor, writer, editorial cartoonist, scale modeller, and an accomplished amateur boxer.

In 1895, Lindsay moved to Melbourne to work on a local magazine with his older brother Lionel. In 1901, he and Lionel, his older brother, joined the staff of the Sydney Bulletin, a weekly newspaper, magazine and review. His association there would last fifty years.

Lindsay travelled to Europe in 1909. In Naples he began 100 pen-and-ink illustrations for Petronius' Satyricon. Visits to the then South Kensington Museum where he made sketches of model ships in the Museum's collection stimulated a lifelong interest in ship models. The Lindsays returned to Australia in 1911.

Lindsay wrote the children's classic The Magic Pudding which was published in 1918. Many of his novels have a frankness and vitality that matches his art. In 1938, Lindsay published Age of Consent.

Cartoons, by Lindsay, were used both for recruitment and to promote conscription during World War I.
Lindsay also worked as an editorial cartoonist, notable for often illustrating the racist and right-wing political leanings that dominated The Bulletin at that time.

Lindsay influenced numerous artists, notably the illustrators Roy Krenkel and Frank Frazetta; he was also good friends with Ernest Moffitt. More on Norman Alfred William Lindsay

Werner Berges, (1941-2017)

"For me, a beautiful woman is still the most perfect that I can imagine: the ideal object of art."  Berges

Werner Berges (born December 7, 1941 in Cloppenburg , † October 26, 2017 in Schallstadt) was a German Pop Art artist. For a number of contemporary critics Berges matured very early to one of the most important representatives of Pop Art in Germany.

From 1960 to 1963 he studied commercial art at the Kunstschule Bremen with a focus on fashion design. From 1962 Berges created a series of abstract works that suggest the American Cy Twombly as a source of inspiration. Berges was interested in Twombly's work early on, but he declined to speak of direct influence.

From 1963 to 1968 he studied painting at the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin. In 1965 Berges slowly turned to figurative painting. Works from this period show anthropomorphic figures, which are distributed on the canvas and at first glance are often not recognizable as such.

In 1967 Berges found his main theme: the woman. No other motif fascinated him as much as the female body: "For me, a beautiful woman is still the most perfect that I can imagine: the ideal object of art."  Berges presented the type of woman known from advertising but he removed the ad figure from its context and presented it to the viewer in a whole new light.

Berges freed women from their advertising context and placed them in a completely new visual context. He reduced the female body to simple shapes and combined them with different patterns, such as circles, flat color stripes, or replaced the body line with loose contour points. With a few exceptions, Berges' women were not famous personalities.

The artist did not only make pictures, but also sculptures . In particular, his motif "Lots of people" is in different variants in the public space of several cities.

He died in October 2017 at the age of 75. Berges' artistic estate is curated by his daughter Amalia Berges. More on Werner Berges
