William Mortensen (27 January 1897 – 12 August 1965) was an American art photographer, primarily known for his Hollywood portraits in the 1920s-1940s in the pictorialist style. He was born William Herbert Mortensen on January 27, 1897 in Park City, Utah, the son of Danish immigrants. During World War I, Mortensen served with the United States Infantry from August 6, 1918 to May 16, 1919. At his enlistment, he recorded his occupation as painting.

After his discharge from the army, Mortensen briefly studied illustration at the Art Students League in New York City. In May 1920 he traveled in Greece, Italy, Egypt and Constantinople to "sketch for educational purposes." He returned to Utah, then traveled to Hollywood.

Mortensen began his photographic career taking portraits of Hollywood actors and film stills. In 1931 he moved to the artist community of Laguna Beach, California, where he opened a studio and the William Mortensen School of Photography. More on William Mortensen

Bouguereau writes: “Among my paintings, “Biblis” is one that I love the most, one that I most enjoyed painting; this even though it was inspired by an incident in the atelier. One of my female models had just asked to rest from a tiring pose; when the young woman was in the process of standing up, she instinctively found herself in a pose so beautiful that I stopped her with a gesture and a shout, begging her to hold the pose for just an instant longer. I sketched her immediately, very quickly… I had seen my “Biblis.” It is one of my best paintings” More on this painting

In Greek mythology, Biblis, daughter of Miletus, fell in love with her twin brother, Caunus. Though she realized that her feelings were taboo, she could not help but try to woo him and sent him a letter citing examples of incest among the Gods. Repelled and afraid, Caunus fled, driving Biblis mad and prompting her to shed her clothes and chase him through Greece and Anatolia, crying incessantly. Exhausted by grief and sorrow, she collapses, perishes and is transformed by nymphs into a spring, or according to other acccounts, is simply consumed by her tears and becomes a fountain. More on Biblis

William-Adolphe Bouguereau (November 30, 1825 – August 19, 1905) was a French academic painter and traditionalist. In his realistic genre paintings he used mythological themes, making modern interpretations of classical subjects, with an emphasis on the female human body. During his life he enjoyed significant popularity in France and the United States, was given numerous official honors, and received top prices for his work. As the quintessential salon painter of his generation, he was reviled by the Impressionist avant-garde. By the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art fell out of favor with the public, due in part to changing tastes. In the 1980s, a revival of interest in figure painting led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work. Throughout the course of his life, Bouguereau executed 822 known finished paintings, although the whereabouts of many are still unknown. More William-Adolphe Bouguereau

Peter Max is a German artist known for his unique brand of rainbow-hued prints and paintings, which he has created since the early 1960s. Employing painterly strokes, his illustrations incorporate a wide spectrum of colors and patterns as seen in his Umbrella Man series. “I'm just wowed by the universe. I'm just glad to do something I love to do. I love color, I love painting, I love shapes, I love composition, I love the people around me,” he once exclaimed. “I'm adoring it all.” Born Peter Max Finkelstein on October 19, 1937 in Berlin, Germany, his parents fled the Nazi regime in 1938, moving between China, Israel, and Paris before settling in Brooklyn, NY in 1953. He went on to study at the Art Students League of New York, later becoming involved with psychedelic movement in the 1960s, creating a number of posters for bands of the time. Though he is an outspoken political activist and environmentalist, Max has also produced designs for the ad campaigns of several high-profile brands, including 7-Up and Chrysler. The artist’s works are included in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Indianapolis Museum of Art. He currently lives and works in New York, NY. More on Peter Max

Miles Aldridge (born 1964, London) is a fashion photographer and artist.

Born in North London to graphic designer Alan Aldridge, Miles grew up accustomed to celebrity. He studied illustration at the Central St Martins to follow his father's steps and afterwards briefly directed pop videos.

Initially Aldridge shot covers of the American monthly fashion magazine W, then he worked for Numéro, Teen Vogue, Vogue Nippon, The New York Times Magazine, GQ, The New Yorker, The Face, Paradis and Harper's Bazaar. For many years he has been an important contributor for Vogue Italia, building a solid friendship with Franca Sozzani.

Aldridge worked as an advertising photographer for Longchamp, MAC Cosmetics, Sergio Rossi, Carolina Herrera, Lavazza and Mercedes E-Class, among the others. He shot for noted fashion designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, Giorgio Armani, Yves Saint Laurent e Paul Smith. More on Miles Aldridge

Jack Welpott (1923–2007) was an American photographer born in Kansas City, grew up in southern Indiana. and was educated at primary and secondary schools in Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. He served in World War II, and returned to the Hoosier state to attend Indiana University. In 1949, he earned his BS in Economics from the Indiana University, Bloomington. Unsure of his direction, he enrolled in a photography class and met the legendary photography instructor Henry Holmes Smith. Under his tutelage, Welpott became enthralled with black-and-white photography as a fine art form.

He studied painting under Leon Golub and Harry Engle, and design with George Rickey, receiving his MS in Visual Communication in 1955, followed by an MFA in 1959.

He began his long teaching career at San Francisco State College as he pursued the career of a professional photographer. In 1973 he was the recipient of the Medal of Arles, France; later that same year he received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts; and, in 1983, a Polaroid grant in association with the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego. Marcel Gromaire (24 July 1892 – 11 April 1971) was a French painter. He painted many works on social subjects, and is often associated with Social Realism, however, one can say that Gromaire created an independent oeuvre far away from groups and movements.

Gromaire was born in Noyelles-sur-Sambre, France. He studied classically at Douai, then continued his studies in Paris, receiving his Baccalauréat in Law in 1909, a judiciary career path he quickly abandoned. He frequented studios in Montparnasse, and attended classes at Académie de La Palette. In 1912, he performed his military service in Lille when the war began and spent the next six years in the army and was wounded in 1916 in the Battle of the Somme.

Gromaire returned to Paris, working in a Paris studio. A meeting with the collector, Doctor Girardin, established his career as an artist when he purchased the entirety of the work of Gromaire. When Girardin died in 1953, the Museum of Modern Art in Paris received 78 oil paintings as well as a collection of watercolours.

Gromaire was recognized very early by galleries and museums. Already in 1931 Pierre Matisse exhibited Gromaire's work at the inauguration of his New York gallery. In 1933, a retrospective at the Kunsthalle de Baie established the importance of his body of works. In 1937, his work was exhibited by orders of the State at the Paris Exposition Internationale.

Gromaire painted a little over seven hundred canvases, an average of about ten per year.

Gromaire also taught; among his pupils was the painter and sculptor Jeanne Patterson Miles. More on Marcel Gromaire

Hot Summer Day
Oil on canvas

Sold for $1,200.00 in January 2020

Oscar Van Young was born in Vienna on 15 April 1906. For business reasons his father found himself in Russia at the outbreak of the Revolution of 1917, and was followed there by his family. Oscar spent some of his teenage years in Odessa, Russia during the civil war that followed the Russian Revolution; his parents died of starvation there. The young man was taken under the wing of some influential American diplomats and sent to the United States under their sponsorship in the early 1920s.

Coming to Chicago in the mid-1920s, Van Young worked as an errand boy, and then as a lithographer, a skill that emerged in some of his earliest artistic works.  He began to gain a reputation as an artist during the Depression years in Chicago. He was studying painting in a class taught by Sam Ostrowsky when he met the artist Loli Vann (née Lilian Finkelstein) in the early 1930s; they were married in 1935. In 1940 the couple moved to Los Angeles. During the war years Oscar worked as a draughtsman for North American Aviation.

In Los Angeles, Oscar Van Young’s reputation as a painter grew to national levels. He showed paintings in important exhibitions. He had numerous one-man shows throughout California, was represented in many museums and galleries internationally, and had works acquired by a number of prominent museums. He was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. For many years he taught privately, as well as at the Otis Art Institute, Pasadena City College, and California State University-Los Angeles. He became a visible and prominent figure in the Los Angeles arts scene during the period 1940-1980. A collection of his professional papers and those of his wife, Loli Vann, is held by the western section of the Smithsonian Institution. Oscar Van Young died in Los Angeles on 26 February 1993, survived for some time by his wife of 57 years. More on  Oscar Van Young
