Marcos Grigorian (December 5, 1925 – August 27, 2007) was a notable Iranian-Armenian artist and a pioneer of Iranian modern art.

Grigorian and his Armenian family immigrated to Iran from Russia in 1930. He studied at the Kamāl-al-Molk Art School in Tehran from 1948 to 1950. After graduating he moved to Rome, where he received a degree from the Accademia di Belle Arti. Upon his return to Tehran in 1954 he opened the modern art gallery Esthétique and initiated a collection of Iranian coffeehouse paintings—a folk genre. In 1956 he participated in the Venice Biennale for the first time, and two years later returned as an Iranian delegate and an International Jury member. In 1958 he organized the first Tehran Biennial. Around the same time he initiated his acclaimed “Earthworks” series, in which he created textured surfaces by fixing materials like sand, earth, and ashes to canvas. He lived in the United States from 1962 to 1970, returning to Iran after the Iranian Revolution. In the 1970s he joined the Faculty of Fine Arts at Tehran University and founded the Independent Artists Group. Gregorian established the Arshile Gorky Gallery, New York in 1980 and the Near East Museum of Yerevan in 1993. More on Marcos Grigorian

01 Painting, The Art Of The Nude, Tom Wesselmann's an american portrait, with footnotes # 128

Tom Wesselmann (1931–2004) was one of the leading American Pop artists of the 1960s. Departing from Abstract Expressionism, he explored classical representations of the nude, still life, and landscape, while incorporating everyday objects and advertising ephemera.

Wesselmann was drafted into the US Army in 1952, two years into the Korean War. During his military service, he learned—then taught—aerial photography interpretation, and began to draw cartoons about his experiences. Upon his return to his hometown of Cincinnati, he completed a BA in psychology at the University of Cincinnati and began taking classes at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. In fall 1956, he moved to New York City to study art at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. At Cooper Union, he met Claire Selley, who would become his wife and lifelong muse.

Living in Brooklyn, Wesselmann supported himself by selling cartoons to the Saturday Evening Post, “gag” magazines, and advertising agencies. In the late 1950s, he cofounded the Judson Gallery in the West Village with Marc Ratliff and Jim Dine. After completing his studies at Cooper Union, Wesselmann spent three years teaching high school art and math. During the evening, he continued to expand his own artistic practice, making small portrait collages.

Wesselmann is highly regarded for his Great American Nude series (1961–73), which combines sensual depictions of the female figure with references to art history and popular culture. Many of these lounging female subjects were painted in patriotic red, white, and blue. In the late 1960s Wesselmann created close-up views of the nude in the Bedroom Paintings (1968–83). More on Tom Wesselmann

Louis Anquetin (26 January 1861 – 19 August 1932) was a French painter; born in Étrépagny, France and educated at the Lycée Pierre Corneille in Rouen.

In 1882 he came to Paris and began studying art at Léon Bonnat's studio, where he met Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The two artists later moved to the studio of Fernand Cormon, where they befriended Émile Bernard and Vincent van Gogh.

Around 1887, Anquetin and Bernard developed a painting style that used flat regions of color and thick, black contour outlines. This style, named cloisonnism by critic Edouard Dujardin, was inspired by both stained glass and Japanese ukiyo-e.

He eventually fell from the public's eye after abandoning the modern movements, opting instead to study the methods of the Old Masters. Thus, Anquetin's works following the mid-1890s, such as Rinaldo and Armida, were especially Rubensian and allegorical in nature. More on Louis Anquetin

"The title gives a great starting insight into what is going on here, but I soon found that it only scratched the surface.

I may have found the core imagery of the painting a little heavy handed, if I was not almost immediately drawn to the windows in the background of the painting that seem to point to a much deeper background and nuanced story than would otherwise be the case." David Willson

Pegah Samaie is an American-Iranian artist who was born and grew up in Tehran, Iran. Pegah’s art moves through the shadow of her past life. She uses art as a tool to face the experiences she and other women have encountered in a culture dominated by patriarchal governments and households. Her early experiences in Iran changed her perception of the role of women in society; they motivated her and influenced her way of talking about women. Art is her voice to talk about her feelings and experiences.

Pegah studied drawing and painting under the guidance of master Iranian artists. She received her BFA with honors from the prestigious Laguna College of Art and Design in Laguna Beach, CA, where she is now also completing her Master of Fine Art degree. More on Pegah Samaie
