Ralph Gibson, (born January 16, 1939, Los Angeles, California, U.S.), American photographer whose work reveals a fascination for geometric elements found in everyday life, such as the meeting of two walls or the curve of a human arm.

Gibson grew up in Los Angeles, leaving home to enlist in the U.S. Navy at the age of 16. He was admitted to the service’s photography school. On leaving the military, he continued his education at the San Francisco Art Institute and then worked as an assistant to photographer Dorothea Lange (1961–62) and later to filmmaker and photographer Robert Frank (1967–68), whereafter Gibson established himself as an independent photographer.

Gibson’s work comprises formal studies and portraits that show a particular interest in light, shadow, and form; his black-and-white work in particular is reminiscent of that of predecessors such as Minor White, Edward Weston, Harry Callahan, and Lange herself. He is widely published, with books that include Light Strings: Impressions of the Guitar (2004), Brazil (2005), and Nude (2012). His numerous honorary degrees and awards include being made Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters (the highest cultural award presented by the French government) in 1986 and winning the Leica Medal of Excellence in 1988. Eugène Narbonne, (French, 1885-1973)
Menton
Oil on canvas
51-1/2 x 77 inches (130.8 x 195.6 cm)
Private collection

In this scene of Menton, on the French Riviera, the sunny port, and the hilly medieval old town crowned by the Basilique Saint-Michel, with its 18th-century bell tower, are of secondary interest to the large bathing beauties basking on the sand in the foreground. More on this painting

Menton, town, Provence–Alpes–Côte d’Azur region, southeastern France. Situated near the Italian border, it is reputedly the warmest winter resort on the French Riviera’s Côte d’Azur; it is also a popular summer resort. The town stands below a rocky amphitheatre, along a wide crescent-shaped bay that is divided by a spur and bounded to the southwest by Cape Martin. Along the shore lies the tourists’ quarter, with tropical gardens, luxurious hotels, wide promenades, and the municipal casino. An artificial sand beach lies between the old harbour and the newer yacht marina in Garavan Bay. The narrow vaulted streets of the old 17th-century section of Menton are cramped together on a narrow promontory above Garavan Bay. The town, which belonged to the counts of Ventimiglia, a noble Genoese family, was purchased in the 14th century by the Grimaldis, lords of Monaco. In 1860 Menton was purchased by France. Eugène Narbonne, born 1885 died 1973, was a noted figurative French painter and professor at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris. His preference for strong volumes and highly sculptural forms characterize his landscapes and figures alike.

He is also known for his students: Maurice Boitel, Georgette Piccon, Bernard Buffet and Louis Vuillermoz.

Maurice Taquoy, (1878-1952)
Deux femmes fumant/ Two smoking women, c. 1928
Watercolour on paper
11 5/8 x 8 1/4 in.
Private collection

Born in the Marne region, Maurice Taquoy (1878-1952) spent much of his life in and around Paris, mostly in elegant company and at horse racing tracks.  When summer came Taquoy would make excursions to other racing venues, such as Deauville, where his services as program illustrator were valued.  And while his biotope was mostly that of the wealthy elite of the capital, Taquoy clearly relished witnessing fox hunts in the country when extended an invitation.  Artistically he was inclined to drawing on paper, in color, mixing pencil, pen, watercolor and gouache.  These drawings seem to have been ends in and of itself, but they were also used as preparation for illustrations, prints and paintings.  Taquoy illustrated prolifically, for publications such as Gazette du Bon Ton for instance.  He also created wonderful aquatints, in which his elegant art deco style shines and his use of bright saturated colors comes out in full force. LA MAGIE NOIRE, c. 1946
Oil on canvas
81 by 60cm. 31 7/8 by 23 5/8 in.
Private collection

La magie noire belongs to a group of works Magritte executed in the 1940s, on the subject of a female nude in an unidentified landscape. The woman is depicted in a classical manner. This traditional representation, however, is juxtaposed with the unexpected colouration of the figure, whose upper body gradually acquires the tone of the sky. In nearly all paintings from this group, the woman has one hand resting on a block of stone. As Magritte explained: ‘One idea is that stone is associated with an “attachment” to the earth. It does not rise up of its own accord; you can rely on its remaining faithful to the earth’s attraction. Woman, too, if you like. From another point of view the hard existence of stone... More on this painting

Lisa Lyon (born 1953) is a female bodybuilder and photo model from the United States, and is regarded as one of female bodybuilding's pioneers.

Born in Los Angeles, California in 1953. Lisa Lyon studied art at the University of California at Los Angeles. There she became accomplished in the Japanese art of fencing, kendo, but found herself lacking sufficient upper body strength so she began weight training. This eventually led her into bodybuilding.

Lyon modeled for Helmut Newton, American fine art photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (resulting in the 1983 book Lady: Lisa Lyon), and Marcus Leatherdale, who published two pictures of her in his first catalogue book at Molotov. Lyon's work with Mapplethorpe was specifically impressive due to Mapplethorpe's ability to portray her body as masculine and feminine in his photos, which shows how her body was truly one of a kind.

She was inducted into the IFBB Hall of Fame in 2000 for being a one-woman media-relations activist on behalf of the sport and Elevating bodybuilding to the level of fine art.

Lisa Lyon also had a short acting career.

In creating the Marvel Comics character Elektra, Frank Miller initially used Lyon as a basis for the character's appearance. More on Lisa Lyon

Helmut Newton was born on October 31, 1920, in Berlin, Germany. He attended the American School in Berlin. From an early age, Newton developed a keen obsession with photography, purchasing his very first camera aged 12. Four years later, Newton was to turn his back on mainstream education, taking an apprenticeship with renowned German photographer, Elsle Simon, known as Yva. Her surreal, multiple exposure photographs that took in fashion, theater and the nude were to inspire Newton throughout his career.

On November 9, 1938, Newton, secured passage to China, where he stopped in Singapore until 1940 before leaving to Australia and finding work as a truck driver in the Australian Army.

In 1948, he married actress June Browne, herself a photographer under the name of Alice Springs, a name she chose from a map of Australia. High-profile contracts with Australian Vogue in the 1950’s; British Vogue in 1957-1958; French Vogue in 1961 provided Newton with the exposure that would allow him to stamp his style on fashion photography over the next 40 years.

Known as the ‘King of Kink’, Newton’s erotically charged imagery was provocative as it was masterful in its compositional and narrative direction. Creating highly charged images layered with voyeuristic, sado-masochist undertexts, Newton was drawn to empowered woman presenting a potent image of female sexuality in the 60’s and 70’s.

Newton died, aged 83, in 2004 following a major car accident in Los Angeles. More on Helmut Newton

Mario Schifano (20 September 1934, Khoms, Libya – 26 January 1998, Rome, Italy) was an Italian painter and collagist of the Postmodern tradition. He also achieved some renown as a film-maker and rock musician.

He is considered to be one of the most significant and pre-eminent artists of Italian postmodernism. His work was exhibited in the famous 1962 "New Realists" show at the Sidney Janis Gallery with other young Pop art and Nouveau réalisme luminaries, including Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. He became part of the core group of artists comprising the "Scuola romana" alongside Franco Angeli and Tano Festa. Reputed as a prolific and exuberant artist, he nonetheless struggled with a lifelong drug habit that earned him the label maledetto, or "cursed".

Schifano had a relationship with Marianne Faithfull in 1969. More on Mario Schifano
