In darkly suggestive paintings and graphically spare prints, Félix Vallotton (1865–1925) chronicled fin de siècle Paris like no other artist of his generation. He lampooned the bourgeoisie with acerbic wit and laid bare the urban turmoil of a society in flux.

The sitter is presumably the wife of the Russian collector Georges Hasen, whom Félix Vallotton captured in numerous of his nudes. The present painting can be considered one of the best works of this genre. The backdrop to the scenery is the artist's studio, where most of the nudes were created from sketches. More on this painting

In order to show the heat that is bearing down upon this young woman, Félix Vallotton used the pointillism technique, a method of painting that enabled him to depict the vibration of air that has been warmed by the sun. This establishes a contrast to the evenly-painted sand upon which the girl is lying. More on this painting

Félix Édouard Vallotton (December 28, 1865 – December 29, 1925) was a Swiss and French painter and printmaker associated with the group of artists known as Les Nabis. He was an important figure in the development of the modern woodcut. He painted portraits, landscapes, nudes, still lifes, and other subjects in an unemotional, realistic style.

His earliest paintings were influenced by Holbein and Ingres. He developed a simpler style during his association with Les Nabis during the 1890s, and produced woodcuts which brought him international recognition. Characterized by broad masses of black and white with minimal detail, they include street scenes, bathers, portraits, and a series of ten interiors titled Intimités (Intimacies) that portray charged domestic encounters between men and women. He produced few prints after 1901, and concentrated instead on painting. His later paintings include highly finished portraits and nudes, and landscapes painted from memory.

He was also active as a writer. He published art criticism during the 1890s, and his novel La Vie meurtrière (The Murderous Life) was published posthumously. More on Félix Édouard Vallotton

William Wallace Gilchrist, Jr., American, 1879-1926, gained notoriety as a portrait painter who captured introspective moments of stillness in his subjects. His genre and landscape scenes, too, excelled in creating serene and deeply personal images of his surroundings. Gilchrist commonly used family members as models, capturing the idyllic calm of a home environment. He expressed a deep desire to preserve cherished everyday events for future generations.

Gilchrist, born 1879, was raised in a prominent family in Philadelphia. Showing artistic talent from an early age, Gilchrist excelled in working with watercolors. Gilchrist pursued his formal studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia. He then continued his education abroad, with four years spent in Munich, Paris, and London.

He was a member of the Philadelphia Art Club, the Fellowship of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Watercolor Club, and the Salmagundi Club. He was awarded the Third Hallgarten Prize from the National Academy of Design in 1908, followed by a gold medal from the Washington, D.C. Society of Artists in 1914, and a silver medal at the Philadelphia Sesquicentennial Exposition of 1926. His work drew high praise at the Panama Pacific Exposition of 1915 in San Francisco, leading to numerous postcards and reproductions. More on William Wallace Gilchrist

Tom Wesselmann (1931–2004) was one of the leading American Pop artists of the 1960s. Departing from Abstract Expressionism, he explored classical representations of the nude, still life, and landscape, while incorporating everyday objects and advertising ephemera.

Wesselmann was drafted into the US Army in 1952, two years into the Korean War. During his military service, he learned—then taught—aerial photography interpretation, and began to draw cartoons about his experiences. Upon his return to his hometown of Cincinnati, he completed a BA in psychology at the University of Cincinnati and began taking classes at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. In fall 1956, he moved to New York City to study art at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. At Cooper Union, he met Claire Selley, who would become his wife and lifelong muse.

Living in Brooklyn, Wesselmann supported himself by selling cartoons to the Saturday Evening Post, “gag” magazines, and advertising agencies. In the late 1950s, he cofounded the Judson Gallery in the West Village with Marc Ratliff and Jim Dine. After completing his studies at Cooper Union, Wesselmann spent three years teaching high school art and math. During the evening, he continued to expand his own artistic practice, making small portrait collages.

Wesselmann is highly regarded for his Great American Nude series (1961–73), which combines sensual depictions of the female figure with references to art history and popular culture. Many of these lounging female subjects were painted in patriotic red, white, and blue. In the late 1960s Wesselmann created close-up views of the nude in the Bedroom Paintings (1968–83). More on Tom Wesselmann
