Helmut Newton was born on October 31, 1920, in Berlin, Germany. He attended the American School in Berlin. From an early age, Newton developed a keen obsession with photography, purchasing his very first camera aged 12. Four years later, Newton was to turn his back on mainstream education, taking an apprenticeship with renowned German photographer, Elsle Simon, known as Yva. Her surreal, multiple exposure photographs that took in fashion, theater and the nude were to inspire Newton throughout his career.

On November 9, 1938, Newton, secured passage to China, where he stopped in Singapore until 1940 before leaving to Australia and finding work as a truck driver in the Australian Army.

In 1948, he married actress June Browne, herself a photographer under the name of Alice Springs, a name she chose from a map of Australia. High-profile contracts with Australian Vogue in the 1950’s; British Vogue in 1957-1958; French Vogue in 1961 provided Newton with the exposure that would allow him to stamp his style on fashion photography over the next 40 years.

Known as the ‘King of Kink’, Newton’s erotically charged imagery was provocative as it was masterful in its compositional and narrative direction. Creating highly charged images layered with voyeuristic, sado-masochist undertexts, Newton was drawn to empowered woman presenting a potent image of female sexuality in the 60’s and 70’s.

Newton died, aged 83, in 2004 following a major car accident in Los Angeles. More on Helmut Newton

Charles Knight (1901-1990) was a highly respected topographical landscape painter, and an important figure in Brighton School of Art over many decades. He attended Brighton School of Art (1919-23) where he was particularly influenced by painter Louis Ginnett and architect John Denman.

Having obtained his Diploma in 1923 he studied at the Royal Academy (RA) Schools. Whilst there he was awarded the Landseer Scholarship and the Turner Gold Medal. Like many contemporary artists and curators he was influenced by the revival of interest in the early nineteenth century water-colourist, John Sell Cotman. He began his long association as a teacher with Brighton School of Art in 1926.

Knight played a significant role in regional arts, becoming a member of the Brighton Arts Club (1922) and being elected to the Society of Sussex Painters (1929). He was also active nationally, being elected as an Associate of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours (1933), with full membership in 1935, and Vice-Presidency (1961). He was a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI, 1933) and continued to show regularly at the Royal Academy Annual Exhibition for most of his life.

During the War he also attracted media attention, having been invited in 1944 to instruct Princess Margaret in art.

After the War Knight remained highly active as an artist, exhibiting regularly until his death. He also remained involved with the Brighton School of Art, as Acting Vice-Principal (1959) and Vice-Principal (1967), before retiring in 1967. More on Charles Knight

01 Painting, The Art Of The Nude, Demetrio Salgado's Female nude, with footnotes # 117

Demetrio Salgado, (1916 - 2000)
Female nude
Oil on Canvas

Demetrio Salgado, (1916 - 2000), was born in Salamanca. He moves to Madrid upon discovering his artistic vocation, settling in the traditional neighborhood of Lavapiés. He studied at the San Fernando High School in Madrid, where he shared classes and a close friendship with Pedro Mozos, Juan Alcalde and Juan Barjola, among others.

In 1955 he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, a period that marked him deeply. Back in Spain he opens his own workshop, where he mainly works as a poster artist until, in the late 1960s, he begins to reap the success of his painting. His prolific pictorial career he combined for years with his teaching work as Professor of Nudes in the Circle of Fine Arts in Madrid.

His work, deeply personal and intimate, has a sober and silent character. Stresses the use of light, discreetly breaking into the compositions, as well as the use of refined and subtle tones, resulting in complex compositions wrapped in an apparent calm.

His work is exhibited in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando (Madrid), in the Pinacoteca of the Circle of Fine Arts (Madrid), in the Museum of Fine Arts of Linares (Jaén), among other institutions, as well as in numerous private collections. More on Demetrio Salgado

« The idea of referring to famous master-pieces probably came to me from a thought that had often crossed my mind – on the subway, for instance – when glancing at some woman who struck me as particularly beautiful, but who didn’t seem conscious of her beauty, and whom a fashion editor would never have allowed me to photograph for a magazine, although I could easily imagine her in a painting by Leonardo da Vinci, Rubens or Ingres.

I visualised them in the costume and with the hairstyle of one of those periods, or even naked in some mythological scene: partly because I like fantasising about bygone ages, but more because, as a photographer, I prefer discovering unexpected beauties, rather than celebrating those that, in my eyes, are somewhat devalued by general admiration. I have to admit that in the beginning I wasn’t a great connoisseur of classical painting. But little by little, as this game of associations went on and as the project took shape, I began to revisit museums and to assemble a small library of art books, which in turn helped to feed my phantasies. » Frank Horvat

Frank Horvat (28 April 1928 – 21 October 2020) was a photographer who presently lives and works in France. He is best known for his fashion photography, published between the mid 1950s and the late 1980s, but his photographic opus includes photojournalism, portraiture, landscape, nature, and sculpture.

In 1988, he produced a book of interviews with fellow photographers such as Don McCullin, Robert Doisneau, Sarah Moon, Helmut Newton, and Marc Riboud. At the beginning of the 1990s, he was one of the first major photographers to experiment with Photoshop. In 1998, he replaced his professional equipment with a compact camera. In 2011, he introduced Horvatland, an on-line iPad application. More on Frank Horvat

Germaine Luise Krull (20 November 1897 – 31 July 1985) made a name for herself in avant-garde photography in the period between the two World Wars. After attending photography school in Munich, she launched her career in Berlin, and later worked in Paris and Monte Carlo. During World War II, her leftist political beliefs led her to spend time in Brazil and French Equatorial Africa, and afterward she traveled to Southeast Asia and later settled in Northern India. She was a remarkable artist who was a pioneer in her field, particularly in regard to the development of the photographic book and photojournalism.

Described as "an especially outspoken example" of a group of early 20th-century female photographers who "could lead lives free from convention", she is best known for photographically-illustrated books such as her 1928 portfolio Métal. More on Germaine Krull
