The present painting was created in 1916 when Karl Hofer was a prisoner of war. The slender bodies of the women are covered with strikingly colorful fabrics, probably a reference to the artist's previous trips to India in 1910 and 1911. The multi-figure composition is one of Hofer's best-known subjects. The painting is characterized by a certain melancholy and lack of connection with the dancers depicted, which runs through Karl Hofer's entire oeuvre. The work on El Greco's "The Vision of St. John" from the beginning of the 17th century shows a similarity. In this work, Karl Hofer masterfully quotes El Greco's Mannerism. As in the work of the Greek master, Hofer dissolves the figures and distorts the forms, by making the limbs. More on this painting

"Their calm yet intensive charisma is largely owed to the strict composition and stylistic elements characterized by a restrained expressiveness that preserves the object without merely reproducing it. Its secret lies in the inconspicuous yet inseparable coexistence of form and colors [..]." Karl Hofer

Female figures or groups at windows are a recurring motif in Karl Hofer’s figural paintings. The round-arched form of the window suggests a medieval architectural setting, and provides an effective frame for the half-length nude. The formal rigour of the composition is broken up by the pieces of cloth forming the curtain as well as the towel placed on the middle of the window sill.

In spite of the young woman’s unabashedly presenting herself with a bare upper body, there is nothing provocative about her appearance. Instead, she exudes an unconstrained carefreeness; her half-closed eyelids and the suggestion of a smile attest to an inward self-assurance... More on this painting

"I could not get enough of the impressions of the country and its people. The coconut palm is the all-dominant tree on this coast, its filigree and airy leaves shiver in even the slightest breeze. The soil is blazing red, a red that turns into pure vermilion in sunset." Karl Hofer, 1953

Karl Christian Ludwig Hofer or Carl Hofer (11 October 1878, Karlsruhe – 3 April 1955, Berlin) was a German expressionist painter. He was director of the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts.

One of the most prominent painters of expressionism, he never was a member of one of the expressionist painting groups, like "Die Brücke", but was influenced by their painters. His work was among those considered degenerate art by the Nazis, but after World War II he regained recognition as one of the greatest German painters. More on Karl Christian Ludwig Hofer
